Lice, what are they? They are little parasite type insects and house on the scalp of a person. Their food is blood and they suck it in little quantities. They usually live on the scalp of 3 to 12 year old kids, especially girls as they have long hair. The infection spreads quite easily. Itching of the scalp results from the bites of lice and scratching repeatedly can cause inflammation of the scalp. It is very rare that there are skin problems due to lice infestation. They do not pose a vital risk to a person’s health too.     

Treatment of Head lice can be done through the lice shampoos and lotions that are available at the stores. One can seek doctor’s advice too in order to have a healthy and lice-free scalp. The medicines are usually prescribed on the basis of the history of lice treatment of the person. These medicines are basically insecticides and one should not experiment with them. Therefore, it is very important to follow the instructions given by the doctor and the guidelines given for the usage procedure of the shampoo and lotion to effectively treat the lice. 

Lice treatment is usually very effective and eliminates the lice completely, but constant use is advised to make it really effective. The common treatment timeline is approximately 7 to 10 days. Before discontinuing the medicines, one must absolutely ensures that each and every louse is killed; otherwise they can easily reproduce and make the scalp their dwelling place.   

 A large number of eggs are laid by the louse on the scalp of a person. Therefore, it is suggested, particularly for kids aged 2 to 6 years that these eggs should be removed manually with utmost care and vigilance. Shampoo the scalp 3 to 4 times in 2 weeks and comb the hair with fine bristle comb or hairbrush after the bath. While combing, make sure the hair is wet. Wash the clothes of your kid and upholstery of his/her room in very hot water and let no one come in contact with them unless they are completely washed. It is very important to prevent lice infestation. Things like toys and bedcovers that can’t be washed should be kept away at least for 2 weeks.      

The main reason behind lice infestation is the dirt and unhygienic surroundings. A person comes in contact with such things and develops lice infection. It may be a single louse that time, but it reproduces at a rapid rate. Hence, it is very important that the rugs and upholstery must be vacuum cleaned daily. Things like hair brush, combs, hair bands and ties, and rubber bands must be either cleaned with lice shampoos or be disposed off. Hair dryers shouldn’t be used on the hair, since some chemical properties of lice shampoos contain flammable substances.

 When you are using lice treatment, you must abstain from using shampoos and conditioners. Do not use pest sprays or insecticides on the hair to kill lice. It will only damage your hair rather than doing any good. The lice treatments should only be applied thrice to a person’s hair. Two lice treatments should not be used at the same time.
